Starnes attorneys Renee Stewart and Alan Bean obtained a defense verdict for a pediatrician and his practice group after a nine-day trial in Murfreesboro, TN. The plaintiff parents alleged that the pediatrician failed to recognize symptoms of hypoglycemia in a 2 1/2 day old infant prior to discharge from the hospital. The infant returned to the ER 16 hours after discharge and was later diagnosed with transient hyperinsulinism. The plaintiffs alleged that the infant suffered a brain injury and resulting developmental delays due to profound hypoglycemia. The plaintiffs sought over $15,000,000 in damages and called multiple experts in support of their claim, including a pediatrician, neonatologist, neuroradiologist, pediatric neurologist, neurospsychologist, life care planner, and economist. The jury never reached the damages question, finding in favor of the defendants on the standard of care after deliberating for just under three hours.
