Mike Wright and Jackie Trimm obtained a defense verdict in favor of an anesthesiologist and a certified registered nurse anesthetist (CRNA), in a seven-day medical malpractice trial wherein a surgical fire occurred during a tonsillectomy for a four-year-old patient. The minor plaintiff sustained burns to his mouth area, and alleged that the anesthesiologist and CRNA breached the standard of care by administering 100% oxygen during the procedure. The Defendants argued that the oxygen administration played no role in the fire due to the seal provided by the endotracheal tube through which the oxygen was delivered, and further that it was appropriate to administer 100% oxygen due to the risks attendant generally to pediatric patients and the risks presented specifically by this child, who suffered asthma and a recent respiratory illness.
