R. Todd Huntley

Todd Huntley is a partner at Starnes Davis Florie and currently serves as Co- Chairman of the firm's recruiting committee. Todd joined the firm after graduating from law school in 2000. 


Todd's practice has been devoted to civil litigation to include health care litigation, biotechnological and pharmaceutical litigation, and long-term care/nursing home litigation. He has experience in trying multiple cases to a jury verdict, specifically in the defense of health care providers.


* Obtained judgment as a matter of law on behalf of a general surgeon arising out of claims that he negligently performed a laparoscopic ventral hernia repair.

* Obtained defense verdict for an addiction medicine physician in case arising out of care provided during the patient's detoxification.

* Obtained a defense verdict on behalf of a radiologist in an eight day medical malpractice wrongful death trial arising from allegations of failure to diagnose a patient's brain aneurysm.

* Obtained a defense verdict on behalf of a Surgery Center after a four day trial arising from an injury during recovery period.

*Obtained a jury verdict for two surgeons arising out of allegations that a patient's death was the result of the first surgeon failing to timely place a thoracoscopy tube in a patient with a pneumothorax and the second surgeon failing to timely perform a thoracotomy to address a hemothorax.

* Obtained a jury verdict in favor of two emergency medicine physicians in a case, pending in Jefferson County-Birmingham Division, arising out of allegations by the plaintiff that the defendants failed to diagnose him with a myocardial infarction or impending infarction during their emergency room evaluation.

* Obtained a defense verdict in Federal Court in favor of a neurosurgeon in a spinal cord injury case arising from complications secondary to a foraminotomy.

* Obtained a defense verdict in favor of a surgeon in a personal injury case involving complications arising from a retained sponge following hernia surgery.

* Obtained a jury verdict in favor of a defendant surgeon in litigation stemming from a complication arising from surgery.

* Instrumental in obtaining the first published opinion in Alabama enforcing an arbitration agreement entered into between a long-term care facility and one of its residents.

Honors And Awards

Todd  has been selected by his peers for inclusion in Best Lawyers in America 2018 for the field of Medical Malpractice Law - Defendants.

While in law school, Todd was selected to be the Executive Editor of the Cumberland Law Review. After graduation, he was inducted into Curia Honoris based on his academic achievement and his level of commitment to improving Cumberland.

Community Involvement

Todd is a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Homewood, Alabama.  He has previously served on the church's Board of Trustees, Finance Committee and as the 2010 Stewardship Chairman.  He is currently the Vice-Chairman of the church's Administrative Board.
